Frequently Asked Questions

Who can be a mentor?
Mentors are welcome to join the program if they meet the following criteria:
    • They are in good standing.
    • They have at least one year of experience as a nurse.
    • They are enthusiastic about assisting new nurse residents with their transition to practice.

What am I expected to do?

Mentors are expected to provide their mentee with at least one hour of support per month. This interaction can be virtual or face to face.  The mentee and mentor will be provided a "Connection Plan", which is a guide for the relationship. This plan will provide direction and activities as the mentor and mentee navigate the relationship.  The relationship is led by the mentee, but together you will determine the level of support that will be most useful for the mentee.  Each relationship is unique, and planning will need to be tailored to aid the mentee in working toward their goals.

How long will the commitment be?

We ask our mentors to make commitments of at least six months to ensure that the mentee is able to fully benefit from the relationship.

How do I join and what are the next steps?

  1. Click on the "Join Now" button above and complete the membership form.  The membership form is required for algorithmic matching to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship.  (Note: demographic questions are optional, only geographic location will be utilized for mentor/mentee matching, and information will be held confidential.  Information would only be shared with the program administrator to showcase efficacy, inclusion, and sustainability).
  2. Mentees will have the opportunity to review your membership form and choose 2-3 mentors who align with their interests and goals.
  3. You will be notified via email once a mentee has selected you as a potential mentor.
  4. You then have the option to accept or decline the request (the mentee will not be informed if decline was selected).
  5. Finally, you will be notified via email once a relationship is confirmed and be provided next steps to access your connection plan to begin your mentoring relationship.
Do I get paid to be a mentor?
For any questions regarding mentor compensation, please reach out to your direct nurse manager or supervisor, as compensation details may vary.

Mentor DO's

  1. Commit to at least one hour of interaction per month. Be flexible on meeting times and places as able.
  2. Set aside time for the mentoring process and honor all appointments.
  3. Invite the mentee to meetings or activities, as appropriate. Work with the mentee to schedule meetings and agenda items.
  4. Respond to emails from your mentee in a timely manner.
  5. Keep information that your mentee has shared with you confidential. If something concerning the mentee needs to be discussed with others, it should first be discussed within the mentoring relationship.
  6. Establish open and honest communication and a forum for idea exchange.
  7. Foster creativity and independence. Help build self-confidence and offer encouragement.
  8. Provide honest and timely feedback to your mentee.
  9. Provide opportunities for the mentee to talk about concerns and ask questions.
  10. If the relationship is not going well, or you have concerns, contact the Program Admin immediately so they can provide full support to resolve the situation in a positive and satisfactory manner.

Mentor DON'Ts

  1. Try to give advice on everything.
  2. Make it all about you.
  3. Share things that don't strengthen the relationship or aid the mentees personal growth (personal problems, gossip, etc.).
  4. Frequently busy and unavailable when the mentee needs your support. If you do not have time, inform the mentee of an alternative time when they can reach you.
  5. Criticize.
